The challenge here was to create a logo that users would adore, and would communicate the app's purpose, along with a catchy tagline.
Since this was a fictional app, I'd have to create something completely from scratch with nothing to reference.
I knew very little about bird-watching, so I'd have to learn to create designs for a topic I was unfamiliar with.
The Challenge
Design Process
1. Research and inspiration. To understand what made bird-watching so attractive, I did some research on it and its best practices. I learned that it's a hobby enjoyed for its peacefulness and connection to nature.
I also looked at a few real bird-watching apps, to gain ideas of how Chirp might want to promote itself.
Overview
This project came to me upon completing Von Glitschka's LinkedIn Learning course: Learning Logo Design. At the end of the course, learners were challenged to try creating a logo for one of 3 fictional brands.
The brand I chose to create for was Chirp, a bird-watching app intended to help users learn about local birds and connect with fellow bird-watchers.

Case Study
2. Ideation. I began sketching out ideas based on my research, combining themes of birds, foliage, and binoculars.

One idea I decided to explore further was a silhouette of a bird perched upon a pair of binoculars. I drew several more sketches with this theme.

From this set of sketches I moved forward with a design featuring a bird looking forwards while perched on a pair of binoculars.

3. Digitization. With my final sketch, I created an initial digital logo in Adobe Illustrator.

I then chose colours, fonts, and added the tagline to the logo.

Green was used to convey themes of nature, and using only 2 shades kept the logo simple and relaxed.
I decided to use all lowercase letters, to create a friendlier, more relaxed tone.
The tagline "find your flock" has a couple meanings. It refers to literally finding flocks of birds near one's home, but also refers to finding "flocks" of other people who are also interested in bird-watching.
4. Finalization. I created a few variations of the logo for versatility, as well as an app icon.

I also made a 1-page "logo anatomy" sheet, to give viewers a quick overview of the design.
