Assiniboine College Creative Media Booklet

Fast Facts
Background

I created this booklet to promote Assiniboine College's creative media programs, with the goal of attracting new students.
Project Results
The printed booklet could be distributed at open house events and similar gatherings, attracting interest among potential incoming students.
The college has 3 creative media programs: Digital Art and Design, Web and Interactive Development, and Media and Communications. The challenge here was to find a way to present all three in a consistent style while ensuring they appeal to potential future students. To enhance the booklet, I would need to add some form of interactivity to it. I would also need to follow the college's brand guidelines.
The Challenge
Design Process
1. Research and inspiration. To get ideas for my design, I analyzed book covers and brochures from other colleges, so see how to best present my college courses in the most appealing way.
The purpose of this project was to create a printed booklet promoting Assiniboine College's creative media programs to potential incoming students. I took the college's Digital Art and Design program from Sept. 2024 to June 2026, so I would use my firsthand experience to create a design that would present the programs in an appealing way.

Case Study
2. Ideation. I began experimenting with different layouts and grid patterns, sketching out lots of ideas. First up, ideas for the front and back covers.

I showed these ideas to my peers for feedback, and the design they liked best used an asymmetrical grid with reference to the golden ratio.
I moved on to sketching layout ideas for the inside pages.

I again gathered feedback from my peers. The general feedback I got was that it was a good idea to have a main image one one side and written content on another, but perhaps the location of each could be changed.
So I created refined sketches based on all the feedback I gathered, starting with the front and back covers.

Next was the inside spreads. To add interactivity to the booklet, I decided to add colourless drawings that users could colour in. Since the programs featured were in creative media, potential students would likely enjoy fun creative activities like colouring.

As for the images, I decided that each program would have one "main" image representing what it provides, and a mascot for some fun.
The Digital Art and Design program's main image would be a drawing tablet with a plane being sketched on it. Drawing tablets are essential for digital artists, and the plane represents new ideas taking flight.

The Digital Art and Design program's mascot would be a fox with a drawing pen in its mouth and paint dripping from its tail. The idea here was to create a mischievous creature with a love of art.

The Web and Interactive Development program's main image would be a computer with a light bulb coming out of it. The light bulb represents developing new ideas, and the text "hello world" is a phrase I've seen in various beginner coding tutorials.

The Web and Interactive Development program's mascot would be a robot reaching out towards some unidentified pixel-y substance. A robot makes sense for a programming course, and the act of reaching out conveys curiosity, important for learners.

The Media and Communications program's main image would be a star with some camera equipment. While drawing this I was thinking of themes of stardom and excitement.

The Media and Communications program's mascot would be a parrot speaking into a microphone. This program is about camera and radio work, so while the main image covers the visual content created here, the mascot would represent the audio side of things.

3. Digitization. Using Adobe Illustrator, I turned my images into vector lineart.
Then in Adobe InDesign, I created a polished version of my booklet design.

4. Printing. With my booklet assembled, I exported it as a PDF and printed it.
